ProxyShare
Written by Terry Watts

ProxyShare is a small application that I created some time ago to try and solve the problem that was encountered on the RM SchoolShare system.  What was happening was that when schools were converting to broadband and required new proxy settings, the settings were being reset after a reboot or logging out.

The easy solution was to create an application that ran every time someone logged on.  This seemed to cure quite a number of problems and provides a solution where RM's own solutions did not work.

Installing ProxyShare

NOTE:

  • This program will NOT work if you have an XP SchoolShare machine on your network (unless installed manually).
  • This program comes AS IS, you take full responsibility for any problems this application may cause by running it on your machines.
  • This program has been tested on Windows 98 and should function with SchoolShare
  • Due to the nature of SchoolShare it not possible to guarantee that this program will work for you.
  • Support for this application is limited to the notes that are provided below.

  1. Save the attached file as ProxyShare.exe to a floppy disk or to the hard drive of your SchoolShare machine.
  2. Switch off ALL SchoolShare machines!
  3. Now select a workstation and switch it on
  4. Logon as Manager
  5. Next copy ProxyShare.exe and place it into the folder c:\program files\rm classmate\schoolshare
  6. Now double click on the ProxyShare.exe file.  The following screen should then be displayed

    Image

  7. Change the proxy address to match your school proxy information as defined in your schools transition pack.
  8. Set a new homepage if you wish (you must include the http:// part)
  9. Tick the users that should have internet proxy settings applied. Note: if you tick All Users all other tick boxes will be ignored.
  10. Click on the Save & Close button to apply the changes.
  11. Now test each of the logon profiles to check that internet settings are being applied.
  12. If you are happy that the settings are being held by the computer you will now need to run the program on each machine.

Installing remaining workstations

Note: The program will run in the background, you will not see the above screen again.

  1. Switch on machine
  2. Logon as Manager
  3. Click Start
  4. Choose Run
  5. Enter C:\Program Files\RM ClassMate\SchoolShare\ProxyShare.exe
  6. Click OK

Installing onto workstations not using the Replication System

  1. Logon to the machine as Manager
  2. Copy the ProxyShare.exe file to c:
  3. Click Start
  4. Choose Run
  5. Enter C:\ProxyShare.exe
  6. Click Save and Close
  7. Move onto next workstation and repeat the process.

How the Program works.

When the program is first run it will create and INI file containing all of the information from the configuration dialog box.  Changing the INI file will result in almost instant changes to your network.  IE, you wish to change the home page that each machine uses, just make sure that all SchoolShare machines are switched off and then edit the proxy.ini file located in the replication share of a workstation.

The program also adds an entry to the Windows Registry that will trigger the program to load each time a user logs into SchoolShare, as the proxy.ini file already exists on the machine the dialog box is not displayed.

As there is no way to get SchoolShare to run the program automatically for us, we need to run the program from each workstation that we want the program to apply setting to.  The application MUST be ran from the C:\Program Files\RM ClassMate folder otherwise the application will try to run from a UNC path that may not be accessible at all times.

Removing the Program

To remove the program simply delete the exe file from the all of the machines, or remove the registry key from HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

Proxy.INI

[OPTIONS]
Proxy=proxy.swgfl.org.uk
Port=8080
HomePage=Http://www.devon.gov.uk/eal/dgfl/index.php
AllUsers=0
Manager=1
Internet=1
Teacher=0
Work=0
Primary=0

The Proxy.ini file contains simplistic information about the proxy settings and options available.  To enable all users to have proxy settings change the 0 (zero) to a 1 (one) and to disable for a given user change from 1 to 0.  Other settings are self explanatory.

Where to get ProxyShare from.

You can download ProxyShare using the link below.  The application is a freeware application so there is no licence required.  The application also comes with no warranty and should in the unlikely event the application fails to function or causes damange you are the person who must take full responsibility for using the application.
