SIMS SQL - Can't access database
Written by Administrator

After installing SIMS Launcher on a workstation, System Manager and Attendance modules display an error stating that the network server or device cannot be found.

If this is the case, drop to the command prompt and check to see if the server machine can be pinged.  If the server machine where the database is stored can't be seen, try pinging the IP address of the server machine.  If the IP address of the server machine replies then you will need to modify the hosts file on the machine that can't access SIMS.

Use Notepad to edit the hosts file.  On a Windows 2000/XP machine the hosts file is located in c:\winnt\system32\drivers\etc or c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc

Copy/Paste this line into the run dialog box

Windows 2000
NOTEPAD C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ETC\HOSTS.

Windows XP
NOTEPAD C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ETC\HOSTS.

Sample Hosts File

127.0.0.1    localhost
10.130.10.1    server1
