If you connect to Terminal Servers quite regularly then you will most likely use the latest version of the Microsoft Remote Desktop Connection tool. The current version is RDP 6.0 and was released some time in 2006. One of the neat features it has is the ability to log in using stored credentials, great if your Administrator has setup the Terminal Server to deal with that, otherwise it is a real pain, as you have to enter user details twice before logging on.
Dealing with Adobe Flash ActiveX problems
Whilst I was working at a school, I came across a problem that I hadn't seen before. The school have an espresso box which they use extensively throughout the school curriculum, this generally works very well on all of the school computers except one. This particular machine when displaying the espresso home page in Internet Explorer kept throwing a wobbly and reloading the page.
Defragmenting computers remotely
If you are a network administrator, you may have wondered if there was a way to remotely defrag your workstations. Professional tools like O&O Defrag Enterprise provides this ability, but if you are on a budget, here is an alternative.
Defragmenting Tools
The more senior computer administrator will remember the old black screen days of DOS and will remember the first Defragmentation tools that became available. Of course back then Defragging a hard drive was quite a novel idea.
Free Download Manager
I often have to download hotfixes, service packs and software whilst I am onsite at a school. All to often I spend a vast amount of time waiting for the "critical" file to download. What can be even more frustrating is when you have mistimed downloading the file and it is now lunch time. The broadband connection is swamped by children surfing for chat rooms, web-mail and internet games. I have found that using a Download manager can help.
